Cred vs Stripe Billing
Stripe invoices subscriptions. Cred runs the credit wallet in between.
Stripe Billing is Stripe's subscription and invoicing layer. Its Billing Credits feature grants monetary credits that apply to metered subscription items when an invoice is finalized. Advanced usage and credit pricing, including custom units and auto-recharge, is now offered through Metronome, which Stripe acquired in January 2026.[1][3][8]
Teams already on Stripe Payments that want subscriptions, invoices, tax, and revenue recognition from one vendor.
Cred is a credit ledger with payments attached. Your server issues and deducts credits per user and credit type over a REST API; a deduct that would overdraw is rejected in the same call. Users buy packs through hosted Stripe checkout, subscribe for monthly credits, save a card for auto top-up, or pay with x402 stablecoins as an AI agent.
Developer teams selling prepaid credits, tokens, or points inside an app, who want balances, checkout, and spend enforcement without running a billing system.

Where each one
is the better pick.
Cred and Stripe Billing overlap, but they start from different places.
Where Cred is better
- Credits are spent the moment you deduct, not settled when an invoice finalizes
- Custom credit types (tokens, points, minutes) without adding Metronome
- Auto top-up on a saved card, built in
- Hosted checkout that adds credits to the buyer's balance with no glue code
- Pay per API call with no percentage of your billing volume
Side by side.

Cred vs Stripe Billing, answered
Can I use Cred and Stripe Billing together?
Yes. Cred charges through Stripe Connect or your own Stripe keys, and its subscriptions are Stripe subscriptions. Cred adds credits after each paid Stripe invoice and keeps the per-user balance that your app deducts from.[3]
What is the difference between Stripe billing credits and Cred credits?
Stripe billing credits are a monetary balance applied to metered subscription items when an invoice is finalized. Cred credits are a live per-user balance in any unit you define; a deduct either succeeds against the current balance or is rejected immediately.[1]
Does Stripe Billing support auto top-up for credits?
Stripe documents threshold auto-recharge as a Metronome capability with no direct analog in native Billing. Cred includes auto top-up on a saved card, charged through the same path as an on-demand charge.[3]
